Menu bar icons missing on your Mac? How to find them.
An icon you rely on is suddenly gone from the menu bar. Usually the app is fine and the icon is just hidden, switched off or not running. Work through these seven checks, quickest first.
The seven checks
1. It’s behind the notch
On a MacBook with a notch, this is the most common reason. When the app you’re using has many menus, macOS leaves out icons that would fall behind the notch, without any warning.
Quick test: click an empty spot on the desktop so Finder is in front. Finder has few menus, so if your icon reappears, the notch was hiding it. Our notch guide has four free ways to make room.
2. The app isn’t running
No app, no icon. Open the app from Applications or Spotlight (⌘ Space, then type its name). If it’s meant to start with your Mac, open System Settings › General › Login Items and make sure it’s in the “Open at Login” list. Apps can drop out of that list after an update.
3. The app’s own setting is off
Many apps have a “Show in menu bar” or “Show menu bar icon” option. Open the app’s settings (usually ⌘ , while the app is in front) and check it’s turned on. An app update sometimes resets it.
4. macOS settings turned it off
- System icons like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Sound or Focus: open System Settings › Control Center and set the item to show in the menu bar.
- App icons on macOS 26 Tahoe: open System Settings › Menu Bar and check the app’s “Allow in the Menu Bar” switch is on.
5. It was dragged out of the bar
Holding ⌘ while dragging an icon down removes it, and it’s easy to do by accident. For system icons, turn them back on in Control Center settings (check 4). For app icons, use the app’s own setting (check 3), or quit and reopen the app.
6. A menu bar manager is hiding it
If you use a menu bar manager such as Menucove, Bartender, Ice, Thaw or Hidden Bar, the icon may simply be tucked away. Open the manager and look in its hidden section. To be sure, quit the manager: with most of them, every icon comes back.
7. The whole menu bar is hiding
If the entire bar is gone until you move the pointer to the top of the screen, “Automatically hide and show the menu bar” is on. Change it in System Settings › Control Center. Full-screen apps also hide the menu bar until you point at the top.
Still missing?
Restart the Mac, then open the app again. If the icon still doesn’t show, check the app’s website for an update, especially after a macOS update. Some apps need a new version before their icon works again.
Never lose one again
Menucove lists every app in your menu bar in one place, including the ones the notch is hiding. Click the crab, find the app, and its real menu opens, even when its icon isn’t visible. Quit Menucove and every icon it tucked away comes straight back.
A calm menu bar, every app one click away.
